Pretty Nails

Wednesday, July 23, 2014

I love all things make-up and nail polish. My collection of each should be considered a problem, but if something makes you happy is it really a problem? In this case, I think not. The more the better! A girl has to have options, right? Okay I'm going to stop asking rhetorical questions...moving on.
I have a vast collection of nail polish (the last I counted it was over 100- eekk) but lately I've felt like I don't have any of the colors I'm looking for. This is a lot like looking in you closet saying you have nothing to wear yet you could cloth a small village in Africa. I've been on the hunt for a specific pink and purple for the summer. I believe I satisfied my pink problem last week when I used Essie's Raise Awareness (it was from their Charity Breast Cancer line a few years ago). I haven't used it in forever and forgot how pretty it was. But as for purple, I actually don't have many (surprisingly). At least not light and bright, all my others are dark- more fall and winter colors.
I was walking through Target the other day (my weekly/daily routine) and as always you have to walk past the cosmetic isles. They must have been changing up displays because there was a small Essie stand just hanging out on one of their carts. And on it was this beautiful pastel-y (I know that's not a word, bare with me and my descriptions), bright but not in your face purple. It's Essie's Sittin' Pretty from the 2014 Neon collection. And boy is it pretty and exactly what I've been looking for. The application kind of had me a little miffed at first. The consistency is kind of runny and the first coat is practically clear. Not at all what I was expecting since the color is so solid and bold. I was expecting a much thicker consistency, but the second coat makes it look just like the bottle. I actually did three coats, but I know I would have been fine with just two. I just think its perfect for summer. If you're on the hunt for a good summer time purple go grab yourself Sittin' Pretty.

Hope you all have a fantastic Wednesday! The girls and I are going with friends to the beach. Its our first beach trip since moving to Massachusetts. Zoe's first beach trip period, so this could get interesting. I'll let you all know how it goes. :)  Thanks for stopping by!

Weekend Shanagains

Monday, July 21, 2014

Our weekend was very uneventful. I should have painted the rest of the living room, but I didn't. I'm blaming it on the weather here in New England. Cloudy, cool, and little spats of rain here and there. The kind of weather that you just want to stay in your pj's, on the couch, under a blanket with a cup of coffee (tea or hot chocolate, whatever you prefer) and read a book or watch a movie. Definitely not paint.
I opened all the windows Saturday morning but closed them quickly when my hard wood floors started feeling sticky (I loath that feeling!). Sunday morning was a totally different story. Windows were opened and enjoyed the cool breeze. Kind of felt a little like fall (my absolute favorite season). I actually really enjoyed it, but I'm not pushing for summer to be over with yet.
I started our football count down on our new message board (45 days till kickoff!), ordered some coffee pods from Keurig -FYI they are selling Pumpkin Spice already, I bought a box (I promise I'm not pushing for fall yet...really), bought some baby shower gifts, read up on some blogs, watched some YouTube Beauty Gurus, snuggled with the girls and watched Finding Nemo (who else is sups excited for Finding Dori?!?), and took the ever important selfie with the girls. We also had a bonfire Saturday night, but as soon as the sun was completely down the mosquitoes came out. I put on bug spray but still got bite about 4 times (insert red mad emoji-con face here). Besides that, I did enjoy spending the time with Hubby and Lilly (Zoe was already in bed) making some s'mores and drinking my adult beverage. Oh! and we lost the top half our our tomato's thanks to a deer (again, insert red mad emoji-con face). The jerk ate all our lettuce a few weeks ago. Went to Loews and picked up some Liquid Fence, crossing my fingers and toes that this works (if you have any other suggestion please let me know.)
With all this doing nothing (well lets not kid here, I'm mom, we all know I didn't really do nothing) this weekend I got to watch my family. I got to watch my girls play and laugh together. That laughter and pure happiness from those two little girls just melts my heart. It's such an over whelming feeling of love that its hard to describe. Lilly is far from my little baby anymore, shes pretty much a full blown kid who really wants to be a teen. The conversations we have and the things that come out of her mouth just amaze me. Plus she's been doing a letter tracing book and keeps at it all on her own, I don't push her in anyway (there will be enough years of fighting about learning), and she absolutely impresses me with how well shes doing when shes writing the letters on her own. It may not seem like much since shes is 4 1/2, but this is one proud Mommy. And Zoe is just growing leaps and bounds. Shes not my tiny baby anymore, shes turning into a toddler. She still refuses to walk, which I find slightly amusing. She copies everything you do (this will not be so cute in a few months when she starts repeating things). She says da-da as soon as Hubby walks into the room. She seems to have forgotten how to say ma-ma so I'm just mushed in with her NA-NA-NA-NA-NA, but that's okay. With them both growing so quickly I find myself getting rather emotional about it. Sometimes I just wish I could freeze time, just for a little. But than that wouldn't be any fun either. I can't wait to see who these girls turn into. But mostly I hope when they are both older they can still find that laughter and pure happens that they share together now. One of my many wishes for them...
Okay, now that I just got all sappy, here are some happy pictures I took with my phone this weekend:

but first, lets take a selfie!
Silly faces!

I hope you all enjoyed your weekend! Hopefully it was more of summer weather than fall weather where you are at.

As always, thanks for stopping by! Talk to you soon!

Home Improvments

Sunday, July 20, 2014

To take you back a little, we moved into our house almost two years ago (August 8th to be exact). It was a brand new construction. We had no say in the actual construction of it, but we are the first people to live and own the house. Everything was a clean slate, so to speak. There is nothing but primer on the walls and we had to buy the basics: bathroom fixtures (toilet paper and towel holders), door stoppers, blinds, and closet organizers (it's kind of crazy the things that you take for granted in already lived in homes). It's taken this long for us to make as many of the room changes as we have. Both of the girls bedrooms are painted along with two bathrooms, and that's it. Well, that was it until last weekend (yay!!).
The Hubby and I (mostly the Hubby) added a back splash to our kitchen and we painted. I always have ideas as to how I want my house to look but I can never seem to be able to fully explain it, so this is were Pinterest becomes my BFF. After all my hours of mindless pinning (mostly the hours when I'm lying in bed and should be sleeping, you know what I'm talking about) I was able to find a back splash idea that I thought would go well with our counter tops and I was able to find the paint that I wanted. The paint was the worst part, we have an open floor plan with no wall dividers. So the paint has to literally be the whole downstairs with the exception of the girls playroom and our foyer.
We bought everything we needed from Lowes. They are just very convenient to our house and always seem to have exactly what we need. Our back splash is by American Olean in the model/pattern Chateau Emperador.
Here's a before picture of our kitchen area and during the process (please don't mind the lack of professional pictures and the mess):

Before

Hubby putting up the first pieces

First side up

Next part

Hubby cleaning up (pots on the stove because we had to make lunch during the middle of this)

Finally all up

Between the cutting, putting up the tile, cleaning, grouting, and caulking, it took us about 4 days to complete. We still need to put the grout sealant on and than it will finally be done, but that's just a spray that takes a few seconds. There was a lot that went into this, but to be honest it wasn't as hard as I was expecting it to be (ask my Hubby and he'd probably beg to differ- poor guy is still picking glass out of his hands). There was a lot of little glass pieces from the cutting of the tiles, so we had to do LOTS of vacuuming and cleaning after Hubby was done. I made sure the inside of the house was as clean as could be before letting either of the girls walk/crawl in the kitchen area or the hallway to our garage. Hubby cleaned up great in the garage, but the pieces were so tinny that a small one got into my crocks and I cut my toe later that night. So if you happen to take on a project like this yourself, be prepared for lots of tiny glass pieces (and move all shoes away from the area).

As for painting, I picked out Benjamin Moore's Revere Pewter. Lowes doesn't carry Benjamin Moore but they do paint match and I think they did a fantastic job! Here are some progress pictures of painting. I started in our entry way from the garage and worked my way into the kitchen away. I'm still not done painting but I plain to be sooner than later.

Painting the trim

The Hubby and I knocked this (^^) portion out in less than a half hour. Zoe was down for a nap and Lilly helped a little. I finished around the cabinets and behind the fridge later that night when both girls were in bed. There's actually still a spot above the fridge that I have to get to, somehow. My arms just won't reach and trying not to get it on the ceiling is a little difficult.

And now, the finished kitchen:

With the back splash done and the painting done (almost) I am in LOVE with the space. I feel like the back splash alone transformed the whole area. I'm not done with the "little' touches. I want to get rid of a few things on the counters and add different things but for now its what I've got. I love my new message board and baskets (its on the left side of the first after picture). I got both at Target and there is a cartwheel offer for 15% off wall art. I made the mistake of not using the coupon when I bought the message board, I didn't think I had a coupon. I scanned it for the heck of it when I went back and bought the baskets and it worked. So lesson learned, always scan your cartwheel no matter what.
For now, the kitchen is probably my favorite place in our house. So silly, I know. But being a military family we move around a lot. We have always lived in apartments and military housing. You can paint and make those places feel "homey" but you always have to paint it back to the basic white when you move and honestly, who's got time for that? So to have even just added paint to a portion of the house that is most lived in, makes such a difference. It feels warm, cozy, and homey. It feels like ours. And that's probably one of the best feeling when it comes to your home.
Once the rest of the living area is done I'll post update pictures. I hope you liked the transformation. If you have any questions about the processes of the back splash just let me know. I'll do my best to answer them (in reality I'll bug the crap out of Hubby to get you your answer).
Thanks for stopping by!

The Light Between Oceans

Friday, July 18, 2014

I just finished reading The Light Between Oceans by M.L. Stedman and I thought it was pretty good. It was one of those that once I got started reading I didn't want to put it down, but when I stopped I didn't rush to get back to it. Make sense? Probably not, but I still thought it was a good read.
I found this book looking through some of the Blogs I follow and their recommendations (Everyday Reading has been a GREAT source of books for me and the girls). After I posted a picture on Instagram a bunch of my friends had either read it already in their book club or were interested too.
I'm no good at explaining things without basically giving away the whole book. So here is the description per Amazon:
"After four harrowing years on the Western Front, Tom Sherbourne returns to Australia and takes a job as the lighthouse keeper on Janus Rock, nearly half a day’s journey from the coast. To this isolated island, where the supply boat comes once a season, Tom brings a young, bold, and loving wife, Isabel. Years later, after two miscarriages and one stillbirth, the grieving Isabel hears a baby’s cries on the wind. A boat has washed up onshore carrying a dead man and a living baby.

Tom, who keeps meticulous records and whose moral principles have withstood a horrific war, wants to report the man and infant immediately. But Isabel insists the baby is a “gift from God,” and against Tom’s judgment, they claim her as their own and name her Lucy. When she is two, Tom and Isabel return to the mainland and are reminded that there are other people in the world. Their choice has devastated one of them."

At times I didn't understand why it went back so far into the lives of some people, but in the end it all makes sense. I don't think you could have fully understood the emotional side of the situation without knowing all the characters pasts. As a mother it tore my heart in different directions. I'd love to elaborate but again, I don't want to give the book away. Grab your copy at amazon, ibooks, or go to the library (that's where I went).
I hope you all enjoy the book and let me know if you liked it, hated it, and how you felt about the whole situation. Can't wait to hear from you!

Black and White Collections

Thursday, July 17, 2014

Black and White seems to be the new collections coming out for kids and adults and I am in LOVE! I can be very basic and tend to gravitate towards "safe" colors. Clearly black and white is as safe as it gets.
Old Navy has come through with the collection for Women. I really like this tank. It's a different style than I normal wear but, simple and classy. You can dress it up or just wear it with shorts or jeans. Gap has a great selection too! I love everything about this Rugby fit & flare dress (you'll start to notice that I also love strips. Especially navy- the more nautical the better). Dress it down for a day with friends, going to a BBQ or dress it up for a nice dinner out. And these Sunkissed scallop-hem shorts! I've had a deep crush on this scallop-hem short trend that's going on. I have yet to purchase any because, as stated before, I don't tend to buy things that I don't think will stay in style for a few years. BUT I really might need to make an exception and jump on this trend. They are just SO cute! I really like this t-shirt from American Eagle. And how pretty is this Crocheted Back top from AE?! Lauren Conrad's collection for Kohl's has some great black and whites too. I really love this look, and its great that its actually a shirt and a skirt. I like this Butterfly Pintuck Romper (it's currently in my shopping cart). You really can't beat Kohl's and their sales. Stack some of their coupons and you have some great finds for cheap!
I personally haven't purchased any of these items, yet (not until it goes on sale anyways), but they are on my wish lists.

As far as the kids lines in Black and White, I instantly fell in love with the Carter's line. Zoe has a few outfits from the Carter's collection. Like this and this (I told you I loved it). Lilly and Zoe have these shorts and this tank. And of course I just couldn't help my self with the shoes. So Lilly got these (which she begs to wear ALL the time!) and Zoe got a super cute pair of gold glitter sandals, but Carter's isn't selling them online anymore (sorry!).

Since Lilly is in the big girls sizes (I just want to cry every time I think about that now- where did my baby go??) Carter's only had a few for her. I've become that Mom and I like to match my girls, thankfully Lilly seems to think its the greatest thing (I'm milking it while I can).
Happy Zoe in the Daddy Loves Me outfit

In the Tunic and Legging set
Lilly & Zoe in the matching Tank and Shorts from Carter's
Old Navy has a great selection for kids too. Lilly has this dress. She loves it and loves that she can wear the sandals from Carter's with it. I have my eyes on a few other outfits for the girls but for now they both have MORE than enough clothes. Hoping most of it goes on sale even more towards the end of the summer and I can get the girls some great fall clothes.

Hoped you liked a few of my picks. Let me know if you found any great deals.

Pineapples it is

Friday, July 11, 2014

I've been reading through all my favorite blogs and have noticed a huge trend in pineapples. At first I thought well, that's sort of a silly trend, but I do like it. Now, I'm pretty practical when it comes to clothes and shopping. If it's not something I think I can wear for more than one season because it will go out of style I tend not to buy it. I LOVE being trendy, but I just don't have the money to shop like that.
So when looking for my 4th of July outfit at Old Navy I found this super cute pineapple top. Can't beat the price and it's so simple. I'm positive I could wear it next year and not really care that pineapples aren't the trend. I've found a few other things going along the pineapple trend that I like (like this tank from Piperlime, but the price is a little out of my range), but I think I'm going to just stick with the ON tank (I say this now). But I do really like this one from Old Navy. Its not over the top, its got some sparkle, and it can easily be dressed up or down.
I paired it up with these American Eagle shorts. I'm in love with these shorts! They can go from dressed up with a nice top and some wedges to casual with just a t-shirt and flip flops. And I wore these Sam & Libby sandals from Target. I really love the Sam & Libby line at Target. Every time I'm in there I always go look at the collection. I swear I could buy them all (and all of Target for that matter- insert e-card about Target here).
I wore this outfit to my brother and his fiance's BBQ the day after the 4th. I wanted to add a picture of my whole outfit but I didn't get one (shame on me). I'm still very new at this and felt a little (that's a lie, VERY) silly asking Hubby to take a picture of my OOTD. But I promise I'll get better at it. Even if it is just a selfie in front of my mirror. However, below is a picture from that day. Again, not a great picture as far as outfits go but it's more about my girls than me anyways. (The girls have matching shirts from Osh'Kosh)

The girls enjoying the cake

Let me know if you have found any pineapple items for a good deal. I'd love to hear about it!

Thanks for stopping by!

  Nikki

Welcome to my timeout!

Hello! I'm Nikki and welcome to my timeout! I should probably explain why I've put myself into time out.
I'm a wife and a stay at home mom (SAHM) to my two little girls. Lilly is 4 1/2 (going on 18) and Zoe just turned the big 1.
I love being a SAHM. I do miss the everyday adult interaction (I worked full time up until June 2012) and lets not forget that extra paycheck (my over indulgence of makeup, nail polish and clothes took a BIG leap to the back burner.) But I love that I get to watch my girls grow into crazy, amazing little humans. I've been on both sides and I'd choose being home with my girls any day of the week.
But I've been doing a lot of thinking lately and I want to do something for myself, something that I love. And I love to talk about the things that interest me. I love makeup, fashion- womens and kids, health & fitness, DYI, home decor, baking, and cooking. Pinterest and I are BFF's. Can't say I'm probably very good at any of those things, but I have a passion for them none the less. I love to read too, although finding time other than to read bedtime stories to Lilly seems impossible. I'm trying though.
So, I'm making this blog my timeout. I'm going to make myself take the time to share the things that I love (hopefully you love them too). Step away from the demands of being a Mom for just a moment (well from changing diapers, cleaning up messes, and being pulled in a thousand different directions), enjoy my WARM cup of coffee (you Mom's know the importance of this) and talk about what I want. I hope the things I share are relate able, inspiring, and simply entertaining.
Well, my timeout is over and it's time to get back to my girls. Thanks for stopping by!

XO,
  Nikki
The girls and I enjoying a freezing swim in my Mom's pool a few weeks ago. My Step-Dad opened their pool just for Lilly when we were visiting. So naturally my little fish had to go in and that meant so did I. Totally worth it, as always, but I'm not cut out for that cold water anymore.
